It was January 21, 2001 at the Hot97 radio station on Funkmaster Flex's show that a hip-hop dynasty came into being. It was on that night that Jay-Z's Rocafella Crew consisting of himself, Memphis Bleek, Beanie Siegel and his State Property crew rolled up and went on a freestylin' rampage. It was this defining moment where Rocafella firmly implanted themselves in hip-hop history as one of the most important crews of our generation.

Cipha Sounds recently dug into his vaults and started posting youtubes from that historic moment on his website, www.dontgetgassed.com and there is more to come. Here are the first two...

Witness history in the making...

More to come...

WJP #100 - Why McCain Never Had A Chance

Posted by Sladewilson

Libertine has an excellent post with four great points. You should click the link and read the post. Really. Then come back here for my take.

Back so soon? No, that will never do. Go back and READ the post. Ingest it.

Ooookay. Now we can jump off (you better have read it. There might be a test later...)

I agree with Lib that during John McCain's concession speech the "Maverick" had returned. It was one of the greatest political speeches of our time and trust me, it will be recognized as such years from now. All you heard about John McCain being a war hero and a servant for his country is all true. And that is partly one of the reasons he lost.

1) The disappearance of "The Maverick": When John McCain lost in 2000, it did something to him. Karl Rove and Dick Cheney used every disgusting tactic in the book and shredded this decent war hero of every dream he had. Eight years later, McCain believed those tactics is what wins elections. He never realized that the same reviled tactics that were used against him were now recognized for the heinous acts they were. And he severely underestimated the discipline of the man he was running against. The Maverick had disappeared and in his place was... George W. Bush.

2) Govenor Sarah Palin: While I understand his need to embrace the conservative base who long believed he abandoned them, he obviously didn't do his homework. The baggage Palin bought with her (and I'm not referring to her family - I'm referring to her politics and her own shady tactics) clearly didn't help. Plus her obvious inexperience was laid bare by none other than one of the softest interviewers in the business - Katie Couric. That's not a knock on Katie, it's just a fact. She has a soft way of getting to a point and one that anyone who has done their background work can clearly work with and look good doing it. Plus, let's be honest - these weren't Mike Wallace 60 Minute Pitbull questions. "What magazines do you read?" She couldn't answer that. Plus, and let's really be honest, Tina Fey absolutely buried her, dirt and all. Even laid a wreath on her at the end. Couple all of that with McCain's age and health issues and her being that close to the presidency was a dead issue that even those in the center spoke out on and those were the ones that McCain believed he could count on. On a side note - clearly the woman is insane and she likes the spotlight and has an agenda that will extend her alotted 15 minutes of fame. The conservative base of Hollywood is actually thinking she can take on Oprah. Don't believe the hype, Sarah. Go back to shooting moose, it's safer than Hollywood.

3) Poor management and contradictions: McCain's team was horrible. Almost every move they had him make was to pander to a base that did not embrace him. And really - "Joe The Plumber"? Where did he even think this was his meal ticket to the White House? Flashes of the old Maverick would emerge as in the last debate and when on the tour, people would make sick and horrible remarks about Obama and he would have to correct them. He had Fox News and Rush Limbaugh attacking him and then half-heartidly embracing him which sent conflicting messages throughout the core base. He wanted his old friend Joe Libermann to be his running mate and it was obvious how upset he was that he was told there would be a fight on the convention floor if he made that choice. He had barely any allies and was surrounded by vultures that he invited to his party. The man looked like he was drowning.

4) Barack Obama: I know some will argue but in many ways, it was race that also played a part. While McCain obviously could care less, it was clear his team believed that because he was running against an untested, young African-American male would be a simple task. Again, they didn't do their homework but what is worse is that they didn't believe their own eyes. Here was a man that clearly was not going to be baited into the age old "Angry Black Man" routine, who was vastly intelligent and was using the tools of the day. Obama used his community organizing skills and ran a campaign that embraced technology, ground work and couple that with his intelligence and fortitude showed a man that could not only lead this country but actually made people believe they counted. His campaign was inclusive to all. He would even give his opponents their just due when he believed they were in the right. He never backed down from telling the absolute truth and was embraced for it. Eight years ago, that John McCain would looked at that young man and actually acknowledge his sense of pride of running against him. Instead, he was made to pander to those who couldn't understand for the life of them what they were witnessing. And by the time McCain tried to take control of his own campaign, it was far too late.

WJP #099 - History

Senator Barack Obama of Illinois will be the 44th President of the United States of America, to be sworn in on January 20th, 2009. He is the first African-American to be voted in as President of the United States.

I'll tell you all what was, up until now, a secret:

I never thought I'd write those words. I never thought I'd see this day. I believed a woman would become President before a black man. And I still believe I will live to see a woman president. I truly believed that the next generation might live to see a black man become president, but my generation would not.

For the first time since my wife accepted my proposal for marriage, I cried tears of joy.

The first time I saw that picture by Alex Ross, I laughed and thought, "Well, at least the brother is legit." Still, while I rooted for him and believed his message, I had doubt coupled with fear.

They might try to kill him. We have some truly sick people in the world and they have access to guns. He could lose to Senator McCain, and while that I could somewhat accept, Govenor Palin as VP was just not acceptable. The more she spoke, the more she terrified me. I could not see her that close to the presidency. I prayed for the man. I actually stumped for the man. I haven't stumped for a candidate since President Bill Clinton.

My wife and I went to vote at 5:30AM. And there was still a line. We got in and out relatively quickly and then I wouldn't watch anything about the election until around 8PM. And I saw some of the numbers and got a little scared but I remembered four years ago and watched how fast it turned.

Then he won Ohio. Say what?

Then he won Pennsylvania.

And as fast as that, it was a wrap. Barack Obama had become the first African-American ever elected President.

And the tears came.

I woke up my wife and we watched Senator McCain's heartfelt concession speech. It was almost like the maverick had returned for a brief moment. Then we watched history - President-Elect Barack Obama's victory speech. And the tears almost came again for me while they flowed freely from my wife.

I'm not one to think that this will all together solve racism. But, I now know there is hope. For a brighter future and a brighter day. I thought about my parents and family members who have passed on. I thought about those who have marched and those who have died for the right to vote.

I realized it will be the first time since President John F. Kennedy that a family complete with small children will live in the White House. I realized so many changes are coming at a rapid pace. I watched people around the world celebrate this victory and knew how much one man had just changed the world.

His speech was humble and while not solemn, it was gracious to a nation that he will have to rely on to help him solve many of our problems. They will not go away overnight. And he will be tested on all fronts.

For one night though - all was right in the world.

Congratulations to our new first family - The Obamas.

Somethings must be shared with the world.

David Letterman Ethers John McCain:

If you haven't heard the story yet, here goes: Senator McCain was booked for Letterman and canceled at the last minute stating he had to catch a plane to DC to help out with the financial crisis. Then Letterman finds out that McCain is across the building doing an interview with Katie Couric. Dave then goes absolutely ballistic on McCain's lying ass. This is classic.

Even more classic?

Watch Govenor Palin totally show her "experience" with Katie. Katie, to her credit, never let the Govenor off the hook...

Part One:

Part Two:

Talk about an "L"... Katie and Dave straight bodied them.

Nobody in the world got swagga like Slade, swagga like Slade, swagga like Slade....

Hee hee hee....

Rest in peace.

Two great ones, gone - suddenly.

Bernie Mac, one of the funniest men on the planet, who had done it the hard way - by working the circuit and getting the respect. He was finally achieving the stardom he so deserved. At the age of 50, Bernie Mac has gone home....

Then there's Black Moses....

Issac Hayes, at the age of 65, was found dead in his home. Grammy award winner, Oscar Winner, who was ranked up there with Barry White and Luther Vandross as the reason many of us are here today...lol. Great composer, Issac has also gone home.

I know this will read morbid but as my grandma would say, they go in threes...

I'm bracing myself for one more...

This has been one rough ass weekend...

Rest in peace, brothers....
